We are seeking a Chief Communications Officer who is that rare combination of pragmatic and visionary, a big idea lover and generator with the ability to think tactically and to execute. The person in this role will craft and lead GivingTuesday’s external affairs strategy and team, creating and executing a comprehensive communications plan with our stakeholders, network and partners. The CCO along with the executive office will be responsible for developing the organization’s communications strategy including narrative and storytelling, digital, social media, thought leadership, events and marketing communications. A successful candidate will be a talented storyteller and exceptional relationship-builder – someone able to elevate both GivingTuesday’s prominence in the social impact field and in service of the mission more broadly. They will need to bring a deep understanding of the social sector (ideally globally) and the ability to strive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.


Communications Strategy:

  • Manage strategy and execution around GivingTuesday’s communications strategy, thought leadership and narrative
  • Develop (and regularly revisit) messaging; ensure it’s properly communicated throughout GT’s programming and various content channels
  • Create ongoing messaging review and media training for staff
  • Advise GivingTuesday team on media relations, crisis communications, emerging messages and responsiveness to important moments
  • Design GivingTuesday thought leadership program to focus on key values and talking points
  • Oversee event and speaking engagements, both owned and earned
  • Develop high-quality materials to support fundraising, partnership, and media relations
  • Identify and develop strategies to address organizational opportunities and challenges, in collaboration with GivingTuesday leadership
  • Develop a calendar and identify opportunities to strengthen brand reputation, awareness and value for key stakeholders, while minimizing risks
  • Identify emerging trends and engage in order to expand the reach and establish GivingTuesday as a thought leader

Public Relations & Content Strategy:

  • Establish a storytelling strategy that supports the organization and movement goals
  • Develop GivingTuesday global PR and media outreach plan to identify key strategies, audience targets, year-round calendar, opportunities, and resources
  • Advise on programmatic content for key initiatives in line with strategic goals
  • Optimize content strategy to identify, develop, optimize and distribute high quality materials that reflect GivingTuesday’s core messages and strengths
  • Draft press releases and outreach materials as needed
  • Identify, manage relationships with, and pitch to key media contacts
  • Manage interviews and media placements
  • Draft op-eds in collaboration with other team members; suggest collaborations with organizations outside of GT
  • Oversee tracking and reporting of media placements

Content Creation & Publishing:

  • Optimize content strategy to identify, develop, optimize and distribute high quality materials that reflect GivingTuesday’s core messages and strengths
  • Develop a storytelling strategy that supports the organization and movement goals
  • Oversee the creation (content + design) of key longer-form pieces, such as annual and data reports
  • Develop marketing collateral and manage the design of custom visualizations
  • Direct and manage contract writers and content producers
  • Advise on programmatic content for key initiatives in line with strategic goals
  • Oversee team members in design, promotion, and execution of online and in-person events
  • Guide creation and repackaging of content for other formats such as blogs, social platforms, and video

General Comms & Marketing:

  • Direct and manage communications, PR, brand and marketing agency resources
  • Build partner relationships to collaborate and optimize communications, identify promotional opportunities and create value for partners as well as GT
  • Guide digital strategy in partnership with the Director of Digital Strategy to maximize the impact of GivingTuesday web properties, search marketing, digital tools, and social media
  • Identify and track communications target metrics and dashboard for measurement and analysis
  • Ensure GivingTuesday’s visual brand and communications materials accurately reflect our priorities and key messages


  • 10+ years of progressively more senior communications roles with track record of success in brand or organization amplification
  • Global experience either living and working abroad or working in a US-based organization with a clear global impact is a big plus
  • A clear and compelling writer, able to craft and amplify a good story using a range of mediums
  • Experience working across sectors including but not limited to corporate, nonprofit, government and philanthropy
  • Demonstrated experience working inside an organization leading the way for radical change
  • Entrepreneurial attitude and organized creativity
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, largely virtual work space
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in communications, journalism, marketing or creative field

Compensation range: GivingTuesday offers comprehensive compensation and benefits. The starting range for this position is $180,000.
